It’s amazing to see how this structure has stood the test of time, especially considering that it is located on a tiny remote island in the middle of the Bering Sea. Great Martyr Orthodox Church is located on St. George Island, which is a part of the Pribilofs island group in the Bering Sea. While the first church on St. George island was built between 1870-78, this spectacular church was actually built roughly 60 years later and just five miles away from the original church.
Built in 1935, this lovely place later became a part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. During construction, 100% of the materials used had to be flown or brought into the island because there are no trees whatsoever that can be found on the island.
