Head to the top of Alaska to see this amazing beach, totally unique. At the top of the world lies this black sand beach that heads right into the arctic ocean. This spot is a destination for those crazy enough to want to jump into the cold, cold water. Check out this beach on the Arctic Ocean, unlike any other on earth. Where else do you have to worry about polar bears while you get hypothermia for kicks? Only in Alaska.
Even when the midnight sun is shining, there can still be ice floating in the Arctic Ocean. That doesn't stop this amazing beach from being beautiful in its own way.
This beach is right in the main area of the town Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow) at the top of Alaska. It's commonly called Barrow Beach or Arctic Beach, or simply "the beach."
The rich black sand is volcanic in origin and softer than it looks. You can enjoy a walk on the beach, watching an epic Alaskan sunset.
This beach at the top of Alaska is a tourist destination. Many who travel so far to get here choose to jump in the water. Join the Polar Bear Club by jumping in the icy water and paying a small fee at a nearby hotel for a teeshirt and certificate.
The archway is on the beach right near town. It is made of whale bone. A perfect spot for a photo proving you've been to the top of the world, America's northernmost town.
The Rescue Station is there to help. If you plan on taking the plunge, be ready. Summer temps are usually around 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Actual polar bears do frequent the area, fishing in the sea and exploring the beach area. They are a real threat and should be avoided as they can travel very quickly and can be violent and aggressive.

There are whaling boat races residents watch from the beach. You may see boats like this being constructed on the beach in the summer in the traditional way.
