Granite tors are lava formations that were formed 70-90 million years ago. Molten lava pushed up the earth’s crust, without quite breaking through the top.

As the earth began to erode, these rocks became visible. And you can see them in person if you take a hike out into Alaska's backcountry.

It’s located within Chena River State Recreation Area, and it’s a treat to see up close. The trail itself is well maintained and easy to follow.

You’ll also climb 3,336 feet in elevation gain throughout the trail. But the views are absolutely worth every step.
