But once you make your way, the trip will be well worth it. This Alaskan gold camp is full of surprises and fun for the whole family.
Chicken Gold Camp is located in Chicken about 1/4 mile off of Taylor Highway. It is just 66 miles north of the Alaska Highway by way of the Taylor Highway, and 108 miles southwest of Dawson City, Yukon by way of the Top of the World Highway.
On your trip here, you will view stunning vistas of millions of acres of wilderness. The camp, itself, is surrounded by acres and acres of forest and mountains which offer amazing views any time of the year.
You will know you have arrived at this Alaskan gold camp when you see the giant chicken and directional sign. The sign points out other "chicken" locations like Chicken Scratch, North Carolina, Hen, Israel, and Hatch, New Mexico.
Chicken Gold Camp is built on the site of a placer gold camp that was established in the 1930s. Explore the mining history, tour the mining museum and gold dredge, view an actual working mine, and try to find your own gold while you visit.
The treasure hunt begins right at camp where you will be taught the intricacies of panning for gold. Folks who are young, old, and in-between all enjoy the quest for that sought after prize.
You can also head to the creek and get down and dirty on your search for riches. You can also try mining or prospecting on one of the camps claims.
Keep your eye on the prize, its not as hard as you think to find a gold nugget.
After you've finished your hunt, head up to the camp store and cafe for some refreshment.
Enjoy a cold drink and a delicious wood fired pizza on the deck with other guests and share your gold hunting experiences.
Learn about the gold mining history by taking the Pedro Dredge Tour. Check out the bucket line gold dredge that is now a National Historic Site.
You can also visit the historic cabin & cache, which is also a part of the National Historic Site.
And if you want to take a nature break, how about going kayaking on the Fortymile River? Chicken Gold Camp has kayaks available and does drop offs and pick ups as well.
Being surrounded by the forest and mountains affords a great opportunity to see the local wildlife that may make their way into the Alaska gold camp.
And you just might catch sight of some natural wonders while you visit.
There is so much to do at Chicken Gold Camp, consider spending a few nights. There are log cabins available to rent and a campground to park your RV if you have one.
