Spring in Alaska is a spectacular event! There are lots of fun and exciting places to spend your spring weekends, but Ketchikan has quite a few of excellent offerings for those looking for a fun and entertaining Alaska spring getaway! We’ve listed some of our favorite things to do on a Ketchikan trip:
1. Shop downtown Ketchikan, including the famous Creek Street
Shopping? Absolutely! There is so much to see and do on Ketchikan's iconic Creek Street. From museums, to some of the best ice cream in town, you can enjoy strolling the boardwalk to check out all the stores. This street is unique in that all of the buildings are built over Ketchikan Creek! A great view and plenty of things to do.
2. Enjoy the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument
Misty Fjords National Monument has hundreds of rivers and streams, fed by the glaciers melting each spring. This is a great season to see some beautiful waterfalls! Take a plane or boat to truly experience all this area has to offer. And don't forget your camera!
3. Hike through the Tongass National Forest
The Tongass National Forest is the nation's largest forest! This is an absolute must-see, and luckily there are plenty of different experience level hikes for you to check out. The trails are dotted with plenty of wildlife and gorgeous waterfalls. Enjoy a small morning walk, or a day long hike! Your choice, but either way, you won't be disappointed.
4. Visit and learn about the Saxman Native Village
Ketchikan actually has more standing totem poles than anywhere else in the world! Part of this impressive feat can be viewed at Saxman Native Village, where you will see 24 handcrafted totem poles, each that tells a different story. This beautiful village also offers a show where you can learn more about the history of the people and area!
5. Hang out with all the animals at the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary
This cool sanctuary has a number of offerings for visitors. There are guided walks for guests through the rainforest, where many animals will come out and go about their day for you to observe! There's even a zipline course for those feeling a little more adventurous.
6. Relax at the end of the day at gorgeous accommodations like the Black Bear Inn
The Black Bear Inn is an adorable lodge located on the edge of the waterfront. You have your options of a bed and breakfast suite, or renting out an entire vacation rental with kitchen! There's also an excellent hot tub for you to warm up in after your long day exploring Ketchikan.
7. Scarf down delicious seafood, like that served at the Bar Harbor Restaurant
In a seaside town like Ketchikan, seafood is currency! This town specializes in some of the best Alaskan seafood you'll have. Enjoy fresh halibut tacos, Alaskan salmon, and more at this cozy restaurant close to the docks. With outdoor seating, if its warm enough you can enjoy the view, too!
