11 Words And Phrases People In Alabama Just Don’t Understand

There are many different words and phrases that are used in other regions of the country that people in Alabama don’t use very often. We know what these out-of-towners are implying, but it’s still odd because they use words and phrases that aren’t in our everyday vocabulary.
Listed below are 11 words and phrases that are used by people from other regions of the country. Some of us also use these words and phrases, but for the most part, we use our own special slang.
1. Pop
Pop? Here in Alabama, everything is a Coke. EVERYTHING!!!
2. You Guys
Northerners may say "you guys," but here in the South, it's "y'all."
3. Shopping Cart
Southerners use a "buggy" to do their shopping. Not a "shopping cart."
4. Hosepipe
Hosepipe? Here in Alabama, we don't use a hosepipe. We use a water hose.
5. Going To
Southerners are never "going to" do something. They're always "fixin' to" do something. As in, "I'm fixin' to go to the store."
6. Push
Here in Alabama, we don't "push" things. We "mash" them.
7. Over There
In Alabama, the phrase "over yonder" is sometimes used to describe the location of something.
8. Family
In many regions of the United States, relatives are referred to as "family." Here in Alabama, our relatives are sometimes referred to as "kinfolk."
9. Pants
Many Southerners use the term "pants," but many also use the term "britches."
10. Be Patient
It's easy to tell someone to "be patient," but where's the fun in that? "Hold your horses" gets the point across much better.
11. Carry
Southerners don't "carry" things. They "tote" them.
