Everyone knows Alabamians practice great Southern hospitality. With that being said, there’s only so much we’ll put up with. If you want to stay on our good side, make sure you don’t do these 15 things:
1. Tell us we take football too seriously.
In Alabama, football, whether it's high school or college, isn't just a sport. It's a way of life! If we take it too seriously, then so be it!
2. Make fun of our family.
You shouldn't make fun of anyone's family, especially in the South. Here in Alabama, we always have our family's backs. Always!
3. Assume we all live way out in the country...
Sure, some of us live way out in the country. However, many of us have chosen to live the suburban lifestyle. Alabama is a great place to live, no matter where your house sits.
4. ...and big cities are nonexistent.
Alabama has several big cities, including Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, Huntsville and many more. Huntsville was recently ranked the "Most Affordable U.S. City to Live In."
5. Claim our barbecue isn't the best.
Come on now! Everyone knows Alabama's barbecue is the BEST!
6. Tell us there's nothing to do here.
Alabama offers plenty of things to do. For example, it seems as though there's always some type of fair, festival or concert going on. Not to mention, we have our beautiful Gulf Coast beaches. If you think there's nothing to do here, take a drive and explore the state. You'll find several things to do soon enough.
7. Assume we're all a bunch of rednecks.
We do have our fair share of rednecks, but that's definitely not a bad thing. Most are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. However, not every Alabamian is a redneck.
8. Make fun of us whenever we "turn it up."
It doesn't matter where we are, when Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" comes on, we can't help but sing along to it. For the people making fun of us, there's a reason why this song is loved not only here in Alabama, but all over the world.
9. Tell us we don't know what good cooking is.
This is truly absurd! Everyone knows Southern cooks are the BEST cooks!
10. Schedule important events on game days.
This might sound selfish, but if you're planning an important event in the fall, whether it be a wedding, family reunion or some other type of gathering, make sure the date doesn't fall on a game day. Supposedly, there's an SEC rule that you're not supposed to schedule your nuptials on game day. Of course this isn't a "real" rule, but it does help get the point across.
11. Claim our state hasn't contributed anything significant to our country.
There are many things Alabama has contributed to this country. For example, we built the rocket that launched the first humans into space. We're also responsible for many incredible life-saving inventions, including windshield wipers and the airbag.
12. Assume culture isn't celebrated here.
Alabama is home to several art galleries, theatres and living history museums. Culture is very much celebrated here.
13. Ask if everyone here is a farmer.
Yes, there are several farmers living here. However, many rocket scientists, teachers, doctors, lawyers, professional athletes, etc. also call Alabama home. Whatever profession you can think of, there's someone here in Alabama doing it.
14. Tell us no sweet tea is available.
What a tragedy! Being told there's no sweet tea available can definitely change the mood of a dinner. Plus, who wants a boring glass of UN-sweet tea? No thank you!
15. Assume we're all uneducated because of our accent.
You should never think someone is uneducated based on their accent. Just because we typically talk slower than people from other regions of the country, it doesn't mean we're any less intelligent. Also, those of us with a college education aren't necessarily smarter than those without one. So, keep this in mind the next time you decide to judge someone's intelligence, especially if they're from Alabama. There are some pretty smart folks here.
As you can see, there are many great things about Alabama. It’s no wonder so many people are choosing to move here. Sure, we tend to let things annoy us more than they should, but that’s only because we’re proud of where we come from.
