This Hike In Alabama Will Make You Feel Like A Hero

Alabama is well known for its great hiking trails. And even though some trails are more difficult to hike than others, they’re all worth a try. Of all the hiking trails in Alabama, one trail in particular is considered to be one of the most difficult—according to several hikers. This trail is known as the Walls of Jericho Trail.
The Walls of Jericho, known as the Grand Canyon of the South, is located in Jackson County and consists of 12,510 acres. The trail is 3.5 miles (one way) and offers incredible scenic views. In addition to hiking, this area offers other activities such as fishing, backpacking, horseback riding and more.
In the beginning, the Walls of Jericho Trail is pretty easy. However, it gets more difficult as time goes on. You can expect to hike down several slopes and scramble over many rocks. While hiking, you’ll stumble upon a log bridge that crosses Hurricane Creek at the headwaters of Paint Rock River. You’ll cross this bridge and continue hiking until you reach the canyon that’s near the area where Turkey Creek and Hurricane Creek merge.
You’re now ready to return back to the trailhead. Because most of the hike to the Walls of Jericho was downhill, the majority of the hike back will be uphill. This part of the hike is very strenuous and is why the trail has a difficult rating.
Even though the Walls of Jericho is an overall strenuous hike, the beautiful scenery you’ll see along the way makes it well worth it. Here’s a sneak peek of the beautiful scenery you’ll see if you decide to take on this hiking challenge:

Directions to Walls of Jericho:
Take US 72 West for 4.8 miles. Turn right onto AL-79. Continue driving north for approximately 25 miles. Once you get to the parking lot for the horseback riding trailhead, drive north for one more mile on AL-79 until you reach the parking lot for the hiking trailhead.
