It's open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It's closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Admission rates are as follows: Adults, $11 plus tax; Seniors (Ages 55+), $9 plus tax; Children (Ages 3-12), $8 plus tax; Children (2 years and under), FREE.
In September 2004, the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo was completely destroyed by Hurrican Ivan. However, it made U.S. history as the first zoo to execute a full-scale, off-site evacuation of its animals during a natural disaster. Its comeback story was soon known all over the world, and it became known as "The Little Zoo That Could."
The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo also features a petting zoo, which is enjoyed by children and adults alike. Food is available for purchase to feed the animals.
In March 2018, construction began at the future home of Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, which will be located north of the Intracoastal Waterway and cover 25 acres.
