One of Alabama’s most underappreciated counties is Jackson County. It has around 52,000 residents, and its county seat is Scottsboro. Founded in 1819, Jackson County, Alabama is known for several things, including its massive amount of caves, which totals more than 3,500. Listed below are three of Jackson County’s most popular caves that belong on everyone’s bucket list.
1. Cathedral Caverns - Woodville
Cathedral Caverns State Park, 637 Cave Rd, Woodville, AL 35776, USA
Located in Woodville, Cathedral Caverns is the main feature of Cathedral Caverns State Park. It's home to one of the world's largest cave entrances, which is 25 feet high and 126 feet across. It's also quite popular for its stalagmites and stalactites.
2. Russell Cave - Bridgeport
Russell Cave National Monument, 3729 Co Rd 98, Bridgeport, AL 35740, USA
Russell Cave, which is located in Bridgeport and is known as the Russell Cave National Monument, is one of Alabama's most popular cave destinations. Due to evidence found by archaeologists, it's believed this cave was occupied for more than 10,000 years, making it one of the most prehistoric caves in the Southeast.
3. Stephens Gap Cave - Woodville
Stephens Gap Callahan Cave Preserve, 8408 Co Rd 30, Woodville, AL 35776, USA
Like Cathedral Caverns, Stephens Gap Cave is also located in the Woodville area. This cave can be entered from the top, which has a 143-foot drop, for more experienced cavers, or from the side for beginners. It features a beautiful waterfall and welcomes not only cavers from all over the world, but also photographers.
