You’ve probably heard of a mai tai, but what about a mai chai? Just imagine the complex flavors of the tea hitting the dance floor and doing the twist with rum, sherry, macadamia, quince, and lime. You will find that kind of tropical take at Tucana, a new tiki bar in Birmingham, Alabama. While the menu changes seasonally, you’re sure to find a craft cocktail with a clever name and just the right blend of flavors to fill your cup. Oh! And that cup will probably look like a banana, a cobra, a coconut, or a tiny toucan.
To find Tucana, scoot down to the Magic City's blooming Parkside district just south of the city center. The new nightlife destination is in The Denham Building, two blocks west of Railroad Park and Regions Field.
To get the full effect of the bar's artful arrangement, head upstairs and get a bird's eye view from the Constellation Room. A disco ball gives the space its name and vibe.
For a group experience that's unforgettable*, the shareable drink options are showstoppers. If you're not into the idea of the giant flaming clamshell called The Final Tide, you might instead prefer an octopus that holds shots while shooting sparklers.
* Remember moderation for the unforgettable aspect.
Around the space, plants and cozy curved booths beckon groups to gather. The interior blends jungle jewel tones with flashes of pink and lush textures.
Clean lines add a modern feel while allowing the more flamboyant Hollywood Regency-style pieces to pop. That's just in case the octopus tables don't have enough arms to grab your attention.
When it comes to the cocktails, there's plenty up the bar squad's sleeves at Tucana. Co-founder and longtime Birmingham mixologist Nicky Vann Tisdale drums up a dozen or so original cocktails featured on the seasonal menus. If your go-to isn't on the menu, don't be afraid to ask. We can't promise you won't be a little scared of your mug. Whatever you order, bet on a delightful presentation.
Ready to gather your crew and turn up some concoction-filled coconuts? I am! We recommend you stick around and enjoy the city for at least a weekend. And if you’ve been to Tucana (or plan to go soon), be sure to let us know about your experience at this new tiki bar in Birmingham, Alabama.
