Alabama is filled with such a variety of haunted places. One of the best ways to experience them is to take a road trip. Listed below is a mapped road trip route that’ll take you from Alabama’s most haunted playground to the state’s most haunted restaurant. There’s even a haunted hotel for you to book an overnight stay. With a distance of 653 miles and an estimated drive time of 11 hours and 53 minutes, it can be accomplished in a couple of days. If you enjoy the thrill of experiencing haunted places, you’ll most certainly want to take this terrifying road trip.
Your first stop is Dead Children's Playground. Dead Children's Playground is tucked away inside Maple Hill Cemetery - Huntsville's oldest cemetery. It's supposedly haunted by the children that are buried nearly. Many people have witnessed the spirits of these children on the playground between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. They've reported moving swings and the ghosts of playing children.
Your next stop is Sloss Furnaces. Sloss Furnaces is an abandoned blast furnace in Birmingham, Alabama. It's believed to be haunted by James Wormwood, a former blast foreman who mistreated his workers. Many people who've explored this historic landmark have reported hearing strange noises and feeling sudden temperature drops. Several paranormal investigators have even experienced screaming sounds while exploring the furnace.
You'll then book an overnight stay at The Tutwiler Hotel, a.k.a. The Tutwiler. The Tutwiler is located in downtown Birmingham and is the city's first modern hotel. This hotel building formerly housed Ridegly Apartments. Several people claim it's haunted by Major Tutwiler - a former apartment resident. Many guests of The Tutwiler have heard knocking on doors and have experienced lights turning on and off by themselves. It's believed that Major Tutwiler is responsible for this.
After checking out of The Tutwiler, you'll then take a drive to Bill Sketoe's Hole. Bill Sketoe's Hole is located on the banks of the Choctawhatchee River near a Newton bridge. It was the inspiration of "The Ghost of Sketoe's Hole," which is one of the South's most famous ghost stories. Bill Sketoe was a Civil War soldier that was hung from a tree limb and left to die after a hole was dug below his feet. This hole remained for many years. People would come and fill it with trash and such, but it wouldn't remain filled. It was believed Bill Sketoe's ghost was still hanging from the limb and clearing the hole with his feet. Today, rocks cover the hole.
Following a scenic drive, you'll arrive at Fort Morgan State Historic Site, a.k.a. Fort Morgan. Fort Morgan is a historic masonry star fort that’s located in Gulf Shores. Ghosts have been seen wandering this historic landmark, including a prisoner who hung himself and a woman who was murdered onsite in the late 1800s.
Your final stop will be Gaines Ridge Dinner Club in Camden. Gaines Ridge Dinner Club is located inside an 1820s antebellum home and is believed to be Alabama's most haunted restaurant. Guests have reported hearing the cries of a baby and have seen the ghost of a woman float by. Some people have even seen the ghost of the home's former owner, Ebenezer Hearn.
