Even people bustling about the urban core of It-city Huntsville need an occasional reminder that Monte Sano State Park is just 7 miles northeast. It’s a testament to natural serenity within a booming city, especially in autumn when it explodes with more color than a rocket launching and sets ablaze with some of the best fall foliage in Alabama.
As a regional resident, I admit to having taken it for granted when cruising up and over it to visit family and destinations beyond. We’ll all agree a visit is in order over the next few weeks to capture its annual autumn show.
Established in 1938, Monte Sano State Park ranks among the state's earliest parks, its legacy intertwined with the efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps.
The dedicated CCC workers crafted an enchanting amphitheater, a charming lodge, and Arts and Crafts-style cottages, which continue to grace the park with rustic elegance.
For those seeking an immersive experience, Monte Sano State Park offers 14 hand-crafted stone cabins for rent. These cozy abodes feature inviting fireplaces and screened porches to create retreats for unwinding in the heart of the park’s natural beauty.
A hidden gem within the park is the North Alabama Japanese Garden. A resident, Robert Black, established it in 1988 as a family project. The garden, previously an overlooked area, bloomed into a haven of tranquility.
A devoted team of volunteers continues to maintain and enhance this haven cloaked in Japanese maples that dazzle in the fall and azaleas that spark joy every spring. It's a hot spot for photography and birdwatching.
Meanwhile, hikers and bikers are spoiled for choice here, with 22 miles of scenic hiking and biking trails.
Open and welcoming from dawn till dusk, Monte Sano Park invites guests to escape the confines of the city for the best fall foliage in Alabama. Have you taken this offer? Tell us about your favorite part of the park.
