There are so many fun things to do on the Mobile Bay, home to several of the state’s most charming towns. And yet you could spend hours exploring and shopping at Page & Palette, a large, lively, independent bookstore in Fairhope, Alabama. If I made a list of the primary comforts for an ideal retreat, this place seems to be it – books, booze, coffee, pastries, live music, charcuterie snacks, and yoga classes (to check myself after so much decadence). Take a look and see if you agree.
Page & Palette has a prominent spot in Fairhope's French Quarter, towering over the corner of Section Street and De La Mare Avenue.
This third-generation, family-owned bookstore opened in 1968 and quickly established itself as a cherished community hub. The shop continues to attract readers of all ages and walks of life, with the mix of characters only making its story richer.
Inside, you're greeted by shelves brimming with print and audiobook editions of new releases and timeless classics. Staff picks always lend thoughtful direction for recommended reading. Amid all the books, you'll find a lot of great gift items and paper goods ranging from stationery and journals to knick-knacks and plushies.
For the littles, there's a dedicated children's section with a trove of books, games, and toys for all ages. Plus, the store hosts regular storytime sessions that often include crafting activities.
The Latte Da coffee shop keeps everyone caffeinated, fueling minds and conversations with hot and cold drinks. Also available to satisfy sugar cravings are sumptuous pastries and creamy Blue Bell ice cream.
Meanwhile, head downstairs if you're craving a nice glass of wine, a craft cocktail, beer, or just a space to tuck away with a book. There, you'll find The Book Cellar, which features a full bar and event space.
Depending on the day, it may be slow-paced or much more upbeat. While Page & Palette hosts many author events you might expect; the store isn't just about books; it's a cultural hub. The Book Cellar hosts live music performances on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Adding a good measure of flavor to those Monday and Friday music events, another local business, Rouxster Catering, provides mouthwatering charcuterie creations and other artful apps.
Every third Saturday, there is a "Detox To Retox: Yoga Fusion" class that's exactly what you may think. The instructor leads folks through an energetic workout to music before easing into a session of calming stretches and poses. Afterward comes the retox bit, where you can enjoy a refreshing cocktail or coffee.
If the bookstore/gym mashup isn't your thing, just joining a book club is absolutely acceptable (and encouraged!). Page & Palette hosts over 10 book clubs, including the welcoming official store group.
