I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
There’s certainly no shortage of beautiful places around the state of Alabama. From scenic drives to state parks, from botanical gardens to waterfalls, jaw-dropping beauty abounds here. Aside from all the incredible natural wonders around the state, there are several manmade structures that are absolute standouts in Alabama, including houses of worship like the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville.
Located on the property of the 400-acre Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, where an order of Poor Clare Nuns live, is the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, a Roman Catholic house of worship.
The main church is similar in style to the Basilica of St. Francis located in Assisi, Italy. Just stepping onto the grounds may makes you feel as though you are in Europe instead of Alabama.
Materials from all over the world were imported to construct parts of the church. The marble for the floors came from Turkey, the cedar used for the pews, confessionals, and doors was imported from Paraguay, and the stained glass was imported from Germany.
You don't have to be religious to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of a house of worship like the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, especially when you step through the doors and gaze your eyes upon the ornate, gilded interior.
The church invites you to explore the peaceful grounds and attend a service if you would like. Mass is held daily, and tours of the Shrine are given Wednesday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
