Like big cities, small rural towns help make up the great state of Alabama. Listed below are nine rural towns here in the yellowhammer State, along with attractions, that are great for visiting whenever you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. You’ll want to visit them all!
1. Magnolia Springs
Magnolia Springs is situated along the banks of the Magnolia River in Baldwin County, Alabama. In addition to it being one of the state's most charming towns, it's also the only U.S. town with a year-round postal mail delivery service by boat.
2. Forkland
Forkland, which has less than 700 residents, is a tiny rural town in Greene County, Alabama. One of its most popular attractions is Bird's Farm. This unique farm features Jim Bird's collection of whimsical sculptures that were created from bales of hay, scrap metal, and more. People drive many miles to see these unique creations.
3. Waldo
With less than 300 residents, Waldo is one of Alabama's tiniest rural towns. It's located in Talladega County and is home to the Waldo Covered Bridge, which is one of Alabama's oldest covered bridges (1858).
4. Mentone
Mentone is located atop Lookout Mountain in DeKalb County and has the highest elevation of any Alabama town. It's home to several attractions, including DeSoto Falls. DeSoto Falls, which plunges 104 feet, is one of the South's most beautiful and recognizable waterfalls.
5. Eclectic
The town of Eclectic, which was incorporated in 1907, is located in Elmore County, Alabama and has approximately 1,000 residents. This town received its unique name because it was founded by a practitioner of eclectic medicine.
6. Woodville
Woodville is located in Jackson County, Alabama and is home to Cathedral Caverns State Park, which features Cathedral Caverns, one of the Southeast's most famous caves. Measuring 25 feet high and 126 feet wide, this cave's entrance is one of the largest in the world.
7. Hytop
If you're an avid hiker, you'll most certainly want to visit Hytop. Like Woodville, Hytop is located in Jackson County, Alabama. This town is well known for its incredible hiking opportunities. One of its most popular trails is the Walls of Jericho Trail. This scenic trail might be difficult, but it's so worth it.
8. Wedowee
Wedowee, which has less than 1,000 residents, is the county seat of Randolph County, Alabama. Its most popular attraction is Lake Wedowee. This beautiful lake welcomes many people throughout the year, especially during summer.
9. Fruithurst
The tiny town of Fruithurst has less than 300 residents and is located in Cleburne County, Alabama. If you're a wine connoisseur, you'll want to visit this town because of The Fruithurst Winery Co. This winery is located just outside of Fruithurst and is part of the North Alabama Wine Trail.
