While driving through Alabama, you’ll come across several roadside attractions. One of the state’s most unique roadside attractions is the Boll Weevil Monument. This landmark’s quirkiness and historical background make it a must see. Read on for more information about this one-of-a-kind monument.
The Boll Weevil Monument, which was erected in 1919, is located in downtown Enterprise at the intersection of College Street and Main Street.
This important landmark represents the citizens' appreciation to the boll weevil. In fact, it's the world's first monument that honors an agricultural pest.
Standing at more than 13 feet, the Boll Weevil Monument is simply a woman holding a boll weevil high in the air. It's also surrounded by a fountain.
This historic monument was erected because boll weevils were destroying the cotton crops of farmers. Due to this disastrous situation, farmers in the area had to diversify their crops, which led them to grow peanuts. This diversification eventually earned more money for Coffee County.
Today, the Boll Weevil Monument stands as a reminder that something disastrous can have positive results. The next time you're driving through Enterprise, take a moment to stop and visit this historic monument. There's nothing else quite like it.

Note: Due to vandalism, the original monument is on display at Enterprise’s Depot Museum. A replica is currently standing in the original spot.
