There are several quirky attractions located throughout Alabama just waiting to be discovered. One of them is Dothan’s “Peanuts on Parade.” For information about Dothan and its quirky peanut attraction, take a look below.
Dothan is located in Alabama's Dale, Henry, and Houston (county seat) counties. Because of its peanut history, the town is known as the "Peanut Capital of the World." It also hosts the National Peanut Festival each fall.
If you ever get the chance to visit Dothan, you'll likely notice several quirky peanut statues scattered throughout the town. In 2001, these statues began as a public art project that became known as "Peanuts Around Town." They were initially intended to help revitalize Dothan's downtown area while promoting tourism. Today, this art project is known as "Peanuts on Parade."
The way this project began is quite simple. Fiberglass peanuts were sold to people, businesses, and organizations. They were then painted to reflect them.
It didn't take long before these quirky peanut statues were showing up on street corners, in front of stores, in parks, and even at the...
...entrance of restaurants.
Today, more than 60 statues make up Dothan's famous "Peanuts on Parade." These include a library peanut, a policeman peanut, a fireman peanut, a superhero peanut, and so much more. A brochure is available at the Visitor's Information Center that'll direct you to each peanut.
The next time you're in Dothan, be sure to thoroughly explore the town to see how many peanut statues you can spot. It'll be an experience like no other.
