Alabama is home to many historic places that have been abandoned and left to decay. Thankfully, there have been quite a few places that have been beautifully restored so we can enjoy them for years to come. One of these places in the Lyric Theatre in Birmingham, Alabama. To learn about the Lyric Theatre, take a look below.
The Lyric Theatre is located in downtown Birmingham, Alabama across the street from the Alabama Theatre.
This historic theater, which has 750 seats, was built in 1914. During its peak between the late 1910s and early 1920s, it hosted a variety of vaudeville touring shows. It was quite successful until the Great Depression. It then closed in 1930-31. Eventually, the theater reopened in 1932 and was mostly used for movie screenings.
After reopening for a few years in the 1970s, the Lyric Theatre was abandoned in the 1980s. Sadly, because of this, its interior slowly started showing signs of decay. This was pretty evident whenever looking at the stage area and/or...
...balcony seats. The chipped paint on the walls, the bad roof, and the broken windows were proof that this theater was in desperate need of a major restoration.
In 1993, Birmingham Landmarks, Inc. acquired the Lyric Theatre. In March 2013, the "Light Up the Lyric" campaign was launched, which helped raise money for the restoration process.
So, the next time you're in Birmingham, consider visiting the Lyric Theatre. It's such a great piece of history that everyone should see at least once.
