Many Alabama residents are familiar with quite a few of the state’s designations. However, several are surprised to learn that the official state nut is the pecan. After all, peanuts are extremely popular here and also have a great history. Take a look below to learn all about pecans, including a few places in Alabama that specialize in them.
In 1982, the pecan was named Alabama's official state nut. This popular nut grows on stately trees all across the Southeast.
After the pecans are picked, they're shelled and then cracked. Interestingly, the word "pecan" means "requires stone to crack." Pecans were very important to Native Americans and even astronauts, especially since they took the nuts along with them to the moon on two Apollo space missions.
The greatest thing about pecans is they can be enjoyed in such a variety of ways. In addition to eating them fresh from the shell, many Americans enjoy them in pies, cookies, ice cream, candy, and so much more.
There are several places in Alabama that specialize in pecans, including Tennessee Valley Pecan Company in Decatur. This specialty shop offers a variety of items made from pecans, including candied pecans, pecan pies, and more. It's one of the city's true hidden gems.
