Alabama is home to several cemeteries, many of which are considered haunted. One cemetery in particular is the famous Church Street Graveyard. To learn all about this cemetery, including its haunting secret, take a look below.
The historic Church Street Graveyard, which covers approximately four acres, is located in Mobile, Alabama. It's considered one of the state's most haunted cemeteries.
Many notable people are buried at Church Street Graveyard, including General Edmund Gaines, a War of 1812 hero, and Eugene Walter, an award-winning author and actor.
There are several types of tombs and headstones located throughout the cemetery. While the dates aren't legible on many of them, some of them don't have dates at all.
There's also a great deal of wrought and cast iron work throughout the cemetery. This is something you'll see quite a bit of throughout the city.
Because Magnolia Cemetery opened in 1836, Church Street Graveyard eventually closed in 1898. However, this historic cemetery still continues to gain popularity each day. This is mainly due to its haunting secret.
Well, the haunting secret isn't much of a secret anymore. In fact, it's what the cemetery is best known for. You see, there's an oak tree that's located just outside the cemetery wall, and it's supposedly haunted.
As legend has it, Charles R.S. Boyington was visiting Mobile in 1833. He was seen walking toward Church Street Graveyard on May 11, 1834 with Nathanial Frost. That same day, Mr. Frost was found dead. Because Mr. Boyington was the last person to see Mr. Frost alive, he was accused of his murder. For his punishment, he was hanged and buried in the graveyard.
Before Mr. Boyington's hanging, he let the town know that an oak tree would grow from his heart to prove he was innocent, which it eventually did. Since then, many passersby have reported cries coming from it both day and night. Are they the cries of Mr. Boyington? Many people believe they are.
