When stress peaks, it seems especially appealing to get as far away from your current reality as possible. The further away from the hubbub, the better. In those moments, I don’t want the added stress of planning a complicated trip. I just want a peaceful atmosphere, beautiful surroundings, somewhere to exercise outdoors, and a few options for good coffee and food.
Even the most remote small town in Alabama, Eufaula, has all of that and then some. Located in the southeastern corner of Alabama not far from Georgia, it’s considered the most remote because of its distance from the next nearest city.
While there are plenty of things to do that make Eufaula a great getaway anytime, we’ve pulled together options focused entirely on getting much-needed R&R.
No matter the time of year, Lakepoint State Park gives beautiful views of "The Bass Capital of the World," Lake Eufaula.
Besides the scenery, you'll find almost every type of accommodation to suit the way you travel. The park has a 101-room resort lodge, 29 cabins, and 10 cottages, including some pet-friendly options.
If your idea of relaxation is roughing it closer to nature, the park has 192 improved campsites with amenities for every type of camping from RVs to tents. The park is located about 10 miles north of downtown Eufaula and other city attractions, which gives you an even more "away from it all" enclave.

If you'd rather have easy walks downtown without losing the lake views, consider booking this historic home (and old town jail) that dates to 1882.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, these days this 1,200-square-foot structure is a thoughtfully renovated, two-bath, one-bedroom retreat that does bookings of a different sort.

Besides its fascinating history and comfortable vibe, the home has an awesome location only about a 15-minute walk to downtown.
You can bring your boat and your dog, too. There is plenty of parking space with boat launches close by. With a $50 non-refundable pet fee, a canine companion can stay.
Start your day the best way - maybe make that the superior way - with a caffeine boost at Largemouth Coffee downtown. The coffee shop is part of Superior Pecans & Gifts, a Eufaula staple for sweet treats.

Superior also houses Eufaula Ice Cream & Shakes, so file that away if you crave a decadent dessert during your stay.
When you fall in love with whatever you try, you'll be happy to know you can take some home. Largemouth Coffee offers just over a dozen different roasts by the pound, and several come decaffeinated.

While you're downtown, consider a morning stroll on Yoholo Micco, The Creek Indian Trail, which begins on East Broad Street and cuts north to northeast. The fully paved, 4.3-mile out-and-back trail is popular with locals for walking, running, and biking.

For a more rugged nature adventure, go a couple of miles north of Lakepoint State Park to Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge. There, you can do an easy .3-mile walking trail near the main entrance or do an eight-mile wildlife drive.

The driving route will take you through uplands and wetlands and has several platforms and an observation tower along the way to see the wildlife and their habitats.

Hot tip: The driving option keeps your trip the most relaxing by allowing you to admire the wildlife from afar. This is optimal considering one of the refuge's featured species is the American alligator.

If prefer architecture and antiques over alligators, we have an alternate plan that's just as good or better.
Eufaula hosts the largest and oldest tour of historic homes every spring called Eufaula Pilgrimage. If you aren't visiting during that time, a few stops you can visit year round, including the Shorter Mansion.

The Eufaula Heritage Association owns and operates the 1906 Classical Revival style home and allows visitors for a small fee Mondays through Saturdays unless there is a special event.
An even older home that is typically open for tours is Fendall Hall, a stunning Italianate structure built in 1860. The property covers five acres that include beautiful gardens.

The same policy applies at Fendall Hall in that it is occasionally closed for special events, so it's best to call ahead before visiting.
At some point, you have to eat! Since you're here to relax, there's nothing better than comfort food. Thelma's Kitchen serves up some of the best around.

This is one of those places where people say everything is good, and there's especially high praise for the tender barbecue ribs, crispy catfish, and juicy pork chops. You can choose among these and other soul food staples like collards and cornbread in a cafeteria-style serving setup.

The surroundings may be serene enough to ensure a relaxing getaway, but why not book a spa visit for good measure? Eufaula has a handful from which to choose, such as Spa at Lake Eufaula, which offers a menu of massage, wellness, and esthetics services.

Are you rested just reading about it? Despite Eufaula being the most remote small town in Alabama, it has a lot to offer. It also has its share of fans among those in the know. If you’re one of them, tell us about your favorite things to do in Eufaula.
