Whenever we hear the phrase “Grand Canyon,” we can’t help but think of Arizona. Interestingly, Alabama has its very own Grand Canyon. It might be much smaller, but it’s still worth experiencing. The name of this scenic canyon is Little River Canyon, which is part of the Little River Canyon National Preserve. You can read about them both below.
Little River Canyon is nestled within the Little River Canyon National Preserve, which is located atop Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne, Alabama.
Best known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," Little River Canyon is one of the Southeast's most scenic areas. It receives visitors from all across the United States, and even world.
Many people are familiar with this scenic canyon, but few are aware of how it came about. If you're one of these few people, wonder no more.
Little River Canyon, which is 12 miles long, was formed by the Little River over thousands of years. Interesting fact: The Little River is one of America's longest mountaintop rivers.
One of the Little River Canyon National Preserve's most incredible features is Little River Falls, which is 45 feet tall and was produced by the Little River. This waterfall spot is also where the formation of Little River Canyon begins.
Another incredible spot that's located within the preserve is the Hippie Hole, which is one of Alabama's most popular swimming holes. It attracts people of all ages, especially during the summer.
