While growing up in Alabama, I learned many life lessons. And most of these life lessons came straight from my grandparents. They were firm believers that everyone should be kind to others and be content with what they already have. I’m the person I am today because of these wonderful life lessons. Listed below are 12 life lessons you’re probably familiar with if you grew up in Alabama.
1. Family is important.
No matter what happens in life, you'll always have your family. Your family should always be the #1 priority in your life.
2. Never take things for granted.
In the blink of an eye, your entire world could be swept away. Appreciate what you have today because it may be gone tomorrow. Also, be sure to always remind your family and friends how much they mean to you because there could come a day when you're unable to.
3. Always respect your elders.
Be sure to always lend a close ear to your elders. They've been around a lot longer than we have and can share stories with us that we won't read anywhere else.
4. Be true to yourself.
You should never try to be anyone other than yourself. No matter what other people think, you were made the way you are for a reason.
5. You can do anything you set your mind to.
You can do or be anything you want to be as long as you work hard. Whether you want to be an astronaut, a doctor, an actor, or even the President of the United States, you can. Anything is possible!
6. Never give up.
When things get tough, you should never give up. The moment you quit is usually when a miracle happens.
7. Money isn't everything.
Some of the happiest people in the world don't have a dollar to their name, and some of the richest people are also the most miserable. You've got to be content with that you have. Yes, you have to have money to live, but it won't buy you happiness.
8. Always be kind and treat people the way you want to be treated.
One kind word can change someone's entire day. Plus, they may be fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind to everyone!
9. Things aren't always as they seem.
You should never be envious of someone because they drive a flashy car, live in a luxurious mansion, or travel to exotic locations. They most likely can't afford everything they have and feel like they have to do it to impress others. You may also know someone who doesn't look like he or she has a dollar to their name, but their bank account may prove otherwise. Don't be so quick to believe everything you see.
10. Always express gratitude.
There is ALWAYS something to be thankful for!
11. Appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us.
To preserve the natural beauty of Alabama, it's up to us to take care of it. If we don't, future generations won't get to enjoy the beautiful surroundings like we currently do today.
12. Always remember that the best is yet to come.
When times get tough, and they will, always remember that tomorrow is a brand new day!
