There are many trails that meander through Alabama, some of which will lead you to things that just might surprise you. One place in particular where you’ll experience one of these trails is Red Mountain Park. For information about this park, including one of its most popular trails, take a look below.
Red Mountain Park, which covers approximately 1,500 acres, is an urban park in Birmingham, Alabama. It offers some of the best trails in the area.
One of the park's most popular trails is the Ike Maston Trail, which is nearly three miles long. The beginning of this trail will take you through forest. You'll then follow directions to the Ishkooda #13 Mine.
The Ishkooda No. 13 Mine dates all the way back to 1873. Interestingly, it was established a couple of years before the city of Birmingham was founded. This historic iron-ore mine has been closed off for many years to the public. That is, until now.
In 2021, the concrete was removed from the mine's entrance. The mine was then fully excavated. Today, it's a popular park attraction that allows visitors to learn a little about Birmingham's mining history. Visitors can actually walk up and peek inside the mine. Keep in mind, for safety purposes, steel bars have been installed.
While exploring this trail, you'll encounter a variety of other ruins that'll take you back to Birmingham's early mining days. It's such a great trail to experience!
