When it comes to seafood, Alabama is home to several restaurants that serve some of the best around. One of these restaurants is Wintzell’s Oyster House. Wintzell’s Oyster House serves a variety of dishes consisting of fresh Gulf seafood, including fried crab claws. For information about this restaurant and its famous fried crab claws, take a look below.
Wintzell's Oyster House is located in downtown Mobile, Alabama.
Established in 1938, this iconic restaurant welcomes thousands of seafood lovers each year from all across the state and beyond. It's also a favorite hangout spot among the locals.
The menu at Wintzell's Oyster House includes a variety of seafood favorites, including...
...fried crab claws. Interestingly, fried crab claws were invented in Mobile, Alabama by Bill Bayley, a restaurateur. Instead of throwing crab claws away like most other chefs were doing, he decided to serve them at his restaurant, Bayley's Seafood Restaurant, in a way that had never been done before - fried.
Sadly, Bayley's Seafood Restaurant recently closed. However, there are plenty of other restaurants in Mobile where you can enjoy fried crab claws, including Wintzell's Oyster House, as mentioned above.
In addition to fried, Wintzell's Oyster House also offers sauteed crab claws. Although both versions are quite different, they're equally delicious.
Bill Bayley also invented the famous West Indies Salad, which includes jumbo lump crab meat, chopped onions, and a variety of spices. After it's mixed well, it's then marinated in oil and vinegar for 24 hours. Like fried crab claws, this delicious seafood dish is also served at Wintzell's Oyster House.
Even though it wasn't invented in Alabama, you definitely don't want to leave Wintzell's Oyster House without giving their homemade bread pudding a try. It's worth every sweet bite!
