While driving through Alabama, you’ll come across many small towns that are full of history and charm. One town in particular is Mooresville. As you take a drive, or stroll, through this historic small town, you’ll be reminded of Mayberry. It’s that charming! When it comes to history, no other small town in Alabama outshines Mooresville. Read on to learn why.
Mooresville is located in Limestone County, Alabama between the cities of Huntsville and Decatur. It covers 64 acres and is a must-visit for anyone passing through the area.
This historic small town, which features white picket fences and tree-shaded streets, has been called "Alabama's Williamsburg."
Because of its incorporation in 1818, Mooresville, which only has around 60 residents, is one of Alabama's oldest towns. It's also older than the state of Alabama, which wasn't admitted to the union until 1819.
Interestingly, the entire town of Mooresville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's no wonder this small town is a popular destination for history buffs. Pictured is the former Bedingfield General Store.
There are several well-known landmarks standing in Mooresville, including its historic post office.
Mooresville's post office, which was built in 1840, is Alabama's oldest operational post office.
One of the post office's most unique features is that some of the mailbox numbers have been used by the same families for generations.
It also has call boxes that date back prior to the American Civil War. Mooresville's post office is located at the corner of Lauderdale and High streets.
Another popular landmark in Mooresville is the historic Brick Church.
This Greek Revival-style church was built from handmade bricks is 1839, and it's located on Lauderdale Street.
Mooresville Church of Christ, which was built in 1854, is another historic church that's located within this small town.
In the early 1860s, prior to becoming the president of the United States, James A. Garfield preached at Mooresville Church of Christ. This historic church is located on Market Street.

...Andrew Johnson, the future 17th president of the United States, lived in Mooresville as a young man while working as a tailor's apprentice.
Mooresville's Stagecoach Inn & Tavern is a landmark that continues to grow in popularity with each passing year.
This historic building, which was built in 1820, was Mooresville's first post office. It's currently operating as a museum and as the official town hall. The Stagecoach Inn & Tavern is located on High Street.
