Alabama is home to many unique attractions, including several with historical significance. One of these attractions in particular is the USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile. To learn why this park is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, take a look below.
The USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park's main feature is the USS ALABAMA, a WWII battleship that retired in 1962. After schoolchildren helped raise money to save it, it was preserved and relocated to Mobile Bay in 1964.
Thousands of people visit the USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park each year because of its uniqueness. In fact, the USS ALABAMA, which was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986, is considered one of America's most unique military attractions.
While exploring the USS ALABAMA, you'll get to walk the exterior deck. You'll also get to tour the inside of the ship, including the kitchen where sailors had their meals cooked.
Another feature of the park is the USS DRUM, a WWII submarine that once had a 72-member crew. Today, this submarine, which was donated to the park in 1969, is the oldest American submarine on public display.
Like the USS ALABAMA, you can also tour the interior of the USS DRUM, which sank 15 ships during its time.
Airplane enthusiasts will love getting to see the A-12 Black Bird, a secret spy plane. Used by the CIA in 1965 for many spy missions, this historic plane is 125 feet long and has a wing span of 65 feet.
In addition to the USS ALABAMA, the USS DRUM, and the A-12 Black Bird, a variety of other historic features are on display at the USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park, including more aircraft and several historic tanks.
