Speaking of Mobile Bay, Fort Morgan played a huge role in “The Battle of Mobile Bay” during the Civil War (1864). In addition to the Civil War, this historic fort was also active during the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II.
The construction of Fort Morgan began in 1819, using more than 40 million bricks. Construction was completed in 1834. Between the years 1900-1923, Fort Morgan was Alabama’s largest permanent military base. And in July 1944, it was totally abandoned. Today, Fort Morgan is one of Alabama’s top tourist attractions.
