Divorcees make up approximately 11% of the U.S. population. According to FindTheHome.com , the 12 cities listed below have the highest divorce rate in Alabama. Only cities with a population of at least 25,000 are included on this list. I’ve also included some information about each city.
12. Opelika
Opelika has a population of 27,956. Of this population, 12.7% have been divorced at least once. Opelika, the county seat of Lee County, has a great downtown area (pictured) that attracts people from all over.
11. Montgomery
Montgomery, Alabama's state capital, has a population of 204,095. The percentage of this population that have been divorced at least once is 13.1%. Montgomery is located on the beautiful Alabama River.
10. Mobile
Mobile, which is located on Alabama's Gulf Coast, is home to the original Mardi Gras and is the state's only saltwater port. Of its 194,942 population, 13.2% have been divorced at least once.
9. Phenix City
Phenix City has a population of 35,753. Of its population, 13.7% have been divorced at least once. Phenix City lies along the Chattahoochee River and is right across the bridge from Georgia.
8. Huntsville
Huntsville became incorporated in 1811, making it Alabama's first incorporated town. It has a population of 184,132. Of this population, 13.7% have been divorced at least once. Huntsville is also home to the Marshall Space Flight Center and is nicknamed "The Rocket City."
7. Bessemer
Bessemer, a suburb of Birmingham, is known as "The Marvel City" and is home to Alabama Splash Adventure - one of Alabama's top tourist attractions. With a population of 27,202, 14.0% have been divorced at least once.
6. Prattville
Prattville, nicknamed "The Fountain City," has a population of 34,349. Of its population, 14.1% have been divorced at least once.
5. Florence
Florence has a population of 39,738 and is the county seat of Lauderdale County. Of its population, 14.1% have been divorced at least once. The city of Florence features a great downtown district, and it's also the location of Alabama's only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home.
4. Dothan
Most of us are well aware that Dothan is known as "The Peanut Capital of the World." However, many of us aren't aware that Dothan has a high divorce rate. Of its 67,574 population, 14.5% have been divorced at least once.
3. Decatur
Decatur is located along the Tennessee River, earning its nickname "The River City." Regarding Alabama's high divorce rate, the city of Decatur comes in third. Of its population of 55,641, 14.7% have been divorced at least once.
2. Birmingham
Birmingham, Alabama's largest city, has a population of 211,705. Of this population, 15.3% have been divorced at least once. Birmingham, nicknamed "The Magic City," comes in second for most divorces in Alabama.
1. Gadsden
The Alabama city that comes in first with the highest divorce rate is Gadsden, which has also been referred to as "The Divorce Capital of Alabama." Of its population of 36,621, a whopping 16.1% have been divorced at least once.
