Wilderness Park, located in Prattville, is one of Alabama’s most special parks. Not only was it the first wilderness park developed inside city limits in the U.S., but it’s also filled with such an abundance of bamboo that you’d think you were in central Asia.

During the Vietnam Era, Wilderness Park, which covers 26 acres, was used by the U.S. Military for combat training purposes because of its climate similarities with Southeast Asia.

If you're interested in knowing how such an abundance of bamboo ended up in Wilderness Park, the story is quite simple. Floyd Smith, one of the former land owners, received a packet of exotic bamboo seeds in the mail. He planted the seeds and they've grown into the bamboo forest we have today. The land fell into the hands of several different owners before the city of Prattville acquired it in 1979. Wilderness Park opened in October 1980.
