Many cemeteries are located throughout Alabama, and several have even been reported to be haunted. Listed below are eight cemeteries in Alabama that are guaranteed to send chills down your spine.
Note: When visiting a cemetery, remember to ALWAYS respect the deceased by not disturbing their grave.
1. Bass Cemetery - Irondale
Bass Cemetery is around 200 years old and is one of the most haunted cemeteries in Alabama. Strange noises have been heard throughout this cemetery. The creepiest thing to occur at this cemetery was the discovery of an open tomb where the corpse had been removed.
2. Church Street Graveyard - Mobile
Founded in 1819, Church Street Graveyard is said to be haunted by Charles R. S. Boyington - a wrongly accused man who was hanged outside the cemetery wall. Today, an oak tree grows at his burial site.
3. Harrison Cemetery - Kinston
Grancer Harrison loved to dance. As a matter of fact, he requested to be buried in his dancing shoes. Since his death in 1860, people passing by his tomb have reported hearing clogs and the strains of a fiddle.
4. Maple Hill Cemetery - Huntsville
After an elderly lady passed away, she was placed inside the family burial house at Maple Hill Cemetery. Her most prized possession was an antique rocker, so her family placed it in the crypt next to her. Many visitors have reported hearing the sounds of a rocker moving back and forth after walking past the burial house. Maple Hill Cemetery is also the location of Dead Children's Playground, where the ghosts of children are often seen swinging late at night.
5. Forks of Cypress Cemetery - Florence
Built by James Jackson in 1820, the Forks of Cypress Plantation was one of the oldest antebellum mansions in Alabama. Sadly, this beautiful mansion was struck by lightning in 1866 and burned down. All that's left standing are the pillars. The Jackson Family is buried in the onsite cemetery, which is supposedly haunted by a tall woman who will appear whenever someone kisses the tallest tombstone.
6. Crestwood Memorial Cemetery - Gadsden
The location of Crestwood Memorial Cemetery is a former plantation site with a brutal history. Many visitors have caught glimpses of a slave hanging, in addition to the man responsible for the hanging - alongside his dog.
7. Adams Grove Cemetery - Sardis
At Adams Grove Cemetery, the ghost of a Confederate soldier has been spotted ordering people off the property. The spirit of a former minister dressed in black has also been spotted several times.
8. New Cahaba Cemetery - Old Cahaba
Located in the ghost town of Old Cahaba, New Cahaba Cemetery is more than 160 years old and several visitors have reported hearing strange voices and children's' laughter.
