There are so many gorgeous churches throughout Alabama, and it’s not surprising considering Alabama is part of the Bible Belt. Some churches are older, bigger, and more architecturally detailed than others, but they’re all still special in their own ways. Some even have lots of history behind them. Let’s take a look at 14 churches that I consider to be gorgeous.
1.) St. Paul's Episcopal Church / Greensboro
Built in 1843 by Leonidas Polk, a future Confederate General, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greensboro is a gorgeous piece of architecture that's located at 405 Church Street, near downtown.
2.) St. Mary's on the Highlands Episcopal Church / Birmingham
Located at 1910 12th Ave South, St. Mary's on the Highlands Episcopal Church in Birmingham is full of beautiful arched windows and the architecture of the building is gorgeous!
3.) 16th Street Baptist Church / Birmingham
In September 1963, this church was the target of the racially motivated 16th Street Church Bombing that took the lives of four little girls during the Civil Rights Movement. The church is still in operation and was designated a historic landmark in 2006.
4.) St. Paul's Episcopal Church / Selma
St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Selma can be found at 210 Lauderdale Street. The original building was burned during the Battle of Selma and the current building was built in 1875. What makes this church a beauty is all of the Tiffany stained glass windows inside.
5.) St. Elizabeth Catholic Church / Greenville
St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Greenville was built in 1904 and originally cost $10,000 - which was considered a fortune at the turn of the century. This Spanish-style church is full of beautiful handmade stained glass windows that were shipped from Germany. The three-story bell tower also makes this church pretty special. This church is located at 400 East Commerce Street.
6.) St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church / Mobile
St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mobile, now known as Prince of Peace Church, was built in 1874 and is located at 351 S. Lawrence Street. Check out those beautiful front doors!
7.) Greensboro Presbyterian Church
Built in 1859, Greenboro Presbyterian Church is a part of the Greensboro Historic District. The church is located at the intersection of Main Street and Demopolis. This church is unique because most of the bricks were handmade.
8.) St. Paul's Episcopal Church / Lowndesboro
St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lownesboro was built in 1843 and is located at 905 Church Street. I love the simplicity of the architecture!
9.) United Methodist Church / Fort Deposit
The original United Methodist Church in Fort Deposit was built prior to the Civil War, but eventually burned down. The current building was built in 1899. This church was built with two different entrances: one for men and one for women. You can find this church at 110 Milner Street.
10.) First Presbyterian Church / Demopolis
Additions have been added to the First Presbyterian Church of Demopolis building over the years, but the original building, built in 1843, was actually confiscated during the Civil War. This church can be found sitting at the corner of Strawberry Avenue and Capitol Street.
11.) Dexter Avenue Baptist Church / Montgomery
Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, located at 454 Dexter Avenue, is the church where Martin Luther King Jr. helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He also preached here from 1954-1960. The Late Victorian style of this church is lovely!
12.) Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception / Mobile
Located at 2 South Claiborne Street, and built in 1950, the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile is absolutely beautiful! The Greek-style architecture and gorgeous stained glass windows make this church stunning!
13.) Cathedral Church of the Advent / Birmingham
Located at 2017 6th Ave North, Cathedral Church of the Advent, built in 1883, was one of the first churches built in Birmingham.
14.) Aimwell Baptist Church / Mobile
Aimwell Baptist Church in Mobile, located at 500 Earle Street, is a historic church that was originally built in 1890 by two brothers. The current building was erected in 1946. The Gothic-style architecture of this church is beautiful!
Keep in mind, this is only a short list of the beautiful churches located right here in Alabama. There are so many more than this.
