There are many Alabama legends you’ve likely been told throughout your life. Several of them might even focus on paranormal activity and will send chills down your spine. One of these is the ghostly legend of Gaineswood, which you can learn all about below.
Gaineswood, which covers five acres, is a beautiful plantation home in Demopolis, Alabama.
Built by General Nathan Bryan Whitfield between the years 1842-1860, it's one of America's finest Greek Revival-style homes.
If you've ever wanted to see the inside of Gaineswood, you're in luck because it's open to the public on Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (except state holidays). Tour times are available by appointment.
The interior of this historic plantation home has many original family furnishings on display, in addition to...
...several antiques that were donated by the Whitfield family to give visitors a better understanding of the era when Gaineswood was first built.
Over the years, many visitors of Gaineswood have reported the sounds of a piano playing. It's believed the spirit of the children's nanny is playing the piano. The nanny and children would always play musical instruments together. After dying one winter, the nanny's body was buried and later sent to her home state in the spring. It appears her spirit was left behind. This legend even has its very own story in Kathryn Tucker Windham's "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey." It's titled "The Ghost at Gaineswood."
The next time you're in Demopolis, consider visiting Gaineswood. It's a great place to tour, especially if you're a fan of paranormal activity. And who knows? You might even have a ghostly encounter that'll send chills down your spine.
