Road food can be a game changer for truly incredible road trips, and a gas station restaurant in Alabama near Mobile lures locals and travelers alike for scrumptious breakfasts, savory smoked meats, and more. While this dining spot might be unassuming, we recommend checking it out. Prepare to have your taste buds blown away!
Satsuma Chevron Breakfast & BBQ is a second-generation family business. Owner Christopher Beasley and his wife, Lydia, now own and operate the business founded by Christopher's parents, Bill and Kitty Beasley.
The business is conveniently located just off Interstate 65 at Exit 19, just 15 miles north of Mobile in Satsuma, which has a population of just fewer than 7,000 people. While most locals know about the fine cooking found at this unsuspecting stop, its location near the state's busiest highway has helped word spread far and wide.
And it's not just the great location that has made this place so popular. Instead, it's Bill's original breakfast gumbo, which he developed around 2010. Texas-born and Louisiana-raised, the elder Beasley created the breakfast bowls by layering Southern breakfast faves, with each state represented in the finished product.
The bowl starts with layers of cheese grits and scrambled egg, followed by applewood bacon, smoked Conecuh sausage from Evergreen, Alabama, diced sausage from Jimmy Dean of Plainview, Texas, and farm-fresh green onions. Louisiana hot sauce is optional. Actually, any ingredient is optional, because the ingredients are layered to order, including a low-carb option.

For a large crew, you can order entire pans of the breakfast gumbo – or any combination of many other delicious foods – through the restaurant's catering service.
if you're not up for a hearty bowl, you can choose from pretty much any of the aforementioned ingredients on a biscuit or plate. Tomato gravy biscuits, chicken biscuits, and hash browns also are available during breakfast hours.
If you don't make it in time for its world-famous breakfast, don't fret. Remember, there's also BBQ in the name. The restaurant also serves lunch and dinner, with a menu featuring smoked ribs, Cajun-dill chicken wings, BBQ sandwiches, and red beans and rice.
The sides include creamy mac 'n' cheese, Louisiana-style red beans and rice with Conecuh sausage rounds, applewood-bacon seasoned turnip greens, and peach cobbler. While you'll occasionally find other items available, these are standard.
You might imagine the grab-n-go cooler is not your basic, and you'd be correct to think that. If you're in a major hurry, you can choose among a couple of housemade deli-style sandwiches or pulled Boston Butt BBQ sandwiches.
Satsuma Chevron Breakfast & BBQ has established quite the following far beyond its South Alabama location. Once you fall in love with that breakfast gumbo, you can rep the restaurant with a tee.
