Several historical events have taken place in Alabama, and we’re incredibly lucky that so many of the sites where these events occurred are still standing today. Because of this, we’re able to visit them in person and stand on the actual grounds where these events took place. One spot in Alabama where history has definitely left a mark is Fort Gaines, which you can read all about below.
Historic Fort Gaines is located at the eastern tip of Dauphin Island, Alabama. It's a great day trip destination for anyone who loves history.
This masonry fort, which was built in 1821, is one of the state's most popular historic sites, and it attracts numerous visitors each year from all across the U.S.
Visitors will also encounter a variety of items on display that show bits and pieces of Fort Gaines' past. One of these items is the anchor from the USS Hartford. The USS Hartford was Admiral Farragut's flagship during the Civil War's "Battle of Mobile Bay" in August 1864.
Visitors of Fort Gaines will also get to see an area that was hit by a shell from the USS Chickasaw during the Battle of Mobile Bay. This is located on one of Fort Gaines' south walls.
In addition to having lots of history, Fort Gaines is also believed to be haunted. Several visitors have reported screaming sounds and the feeling of cold spots while exploring the historic site. Many have also witnessed the spirits of military-dressed men roaming the grounds. Is Fort Gaines really haunted, though? You'll have to visit to find out for sure.
