As autumn color hits its stride, this is a prime time for a quick, fun fall getaway in Alabama at Sipsey Wilderness in Bankhead National Forest. The forest spans more than 181,000 acres, has more than 90 miles of trails, and is called the Land of 1,000 Waterfalls. In other words, if you love nature, it’s hard to do it wrong here. I’ve put together a few tips on where to go and what to do to increase your odds of a fairytale fall adventure.
A popular waterfall trail is the Borden Creek Wild Hiking Trail to Fall Creek Falls, a 2.1-mile out-and-back trail rated as easy to moderate. The trailhead is at the Sipsey River Picnic Area off Cranal Road along the southern boundary of the wilderness area.
The trail guides you north into the forest along the Sipsey Fork and ends where it meets with Fall Creek. Because of its proximity to the river, always check water levels before taking this trail.
Now, let's talk about where you'll rest your head after a day of exploring. Check out Sipsey Creek Farm near Double Springs on Wilderness Parkway. From the Sipsey Recreation Parking Area, it’s less than 15 miles south. Sipsey Creek Farm is a small hobby farm with several nice glamping tent rentals situated around shared amenities.
The large bell tent, Jewell Ridge, sleeps four to six people. Currently, it is located closest to the farm’s shared amenities for guests, which include indoor plumbing at the bathhouse and barn, the latter of which also has a small kitchen.
If you need slightly more space, the farm offers an even larger Family Tent. For those seeking the most serene surroundings, there's a third, roomy tent tucked away in the quietest corner of the property.
There even is a pair of peacocks! While you're likely to see some of the farm's animals just by virtue of your stay, be sure to book a farm tour if you want to meet everyone.
Stay at least a night - maybe two - to get out and enjoy more hiking in the Sipsey Wilderness. You won't forget seeing the last bursts of autumn color contrasting against the mossy green rock formations.
What is your favorite spot or hike in the Bankhead National Forest? Have you had a chance to camp or glamp there, share your tips. You can learn more about the accommodations and booking availability for Sipsey Creek Farm on its website and the Sipsey Creek Farm Facebook page.
