Alabama is home to many scenic places. While some of these places are well known and easily accessed, others aren’t. In fact, many are located in the middle of nowhere and considered true hidden gems. A particular place that fits this description is Dismals Canyon, which you can read all about below.
Dismals Canyon is a beautiful sandstone gorge that's located off the beaten path in Phil Campbell, Alabama.
Tucked within the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, this natural landmark is one of the few places in the world where you'll find dismalites. Dismalites are rare insects that resemble glowworms.
While exploring Dismals Canyon, you'll be surrounded by a lush green forest and encounter several moss-covered boulders. There's no other place in the world quite like it.
As previously mentioned, you'll encounter several moss-covered boulders while exploring Dismals Canyon. In fact, some of them you'll have to squeeze your way through, including Burr's Hideout (pictured). This particular spot is believed to be where Aaron Burr hid after killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Jesse James is another popular outlaw that used the canyon as a hideout.
And finally, Dismals Canyon is home to a variety of waterfalls, including Rainbow Falls (pictured). Rainbow Falls is considered one of North Alabama's most beautiful waterfalls. After experiencing it up close and in person, it's easy to understand why.
