North Alabama's Coon Dog Cemetery is located off the beaten path in the tiny rural town of Cherokee.
Only coon hounds are allowed to be buried at this unique cemetery, which makes it one of the only cemeteries of its kind in the world.
Key Underwood, a raccoon hunter, buried his loyal coon dog Troop in this area on September 4, 1937. Troop's special spot was a popular hunting camp that he really enjoyed.
Following Troop's burial, the Coon Dog Cemetery was born. Coon dog owners from all over the country were soon burying their loyal companions here.
Also, more than 185 coon dogs call this cemetery their final resting place.
Over the years, people from near and far have visited the Coon Dog Cemetery. In fact, several of them have returned multiple times. It's such a unique place!
