Alabama hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year that attract people from all across the state and beyond. One of these is the Cahaba Lily Festival, which showcases thousands of Cahaba lilies in full bloom. For information about this popular spring festival, take a look below.
The Cahaba Lily Festival, which was founded in 1989, is a unique outdoor festival that takes place each year in West Blocton, Alabama.
This year's festival is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 16. It'll begin around 9 a.m. with indoor presentations by a variety of nature/wildflower groups and Botanist Larry Davenport. Following lunch, festival attendees will head to the river to view the Cahaba lilies. The Cahaba Lily Center will also host a story telling event in the late afternoon.
The Cahaba Lily Festival's main purpose is to celebrate the beautiful Cahaba lily and it's surrounding scenery. Interestingly, Southern Living recently included the Cahaba lily on its list of "Best Natural Wonders in the South."
If you're unfamiliar with the Cahaba lily, no worries. It's a lovely white flower that blooms from early May to late June. Here in Alabama, a popular spot to find these lilies is the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge. In fact, this refuge area, which covers nearly 4,000 acres, is home to the world's largest stand of Cahaba lilies.
There's no denying that viewing these Cahaba lilies in full bloom each spring is such an incredible sight to behold. And after just one visit to the Cahaba Lily Festival, you'll want to come back year after year.
