When compared to the other 49 states, Alabama is truly one-of-a-kind. From the quirky names of our small towns to our strange food combinations, what we think of as normal, most outsiders don’t. We may be different, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Listed below are 11 ways Alabama is America’s black sheep.
1. We schedule everything around college football.
Weddings, reunions, vacations...you name it!
2. Our store shelves begin to look like this if there's even the slightest chance of snow.
And if there's any mention of a possible snowstorm, you can only imagine what this entire aisle will look like.
3. We host festivals with the quirkiest of names. Pictured is the annual Athens Grease Festival, a celebration of all things fried.
This is THE festival for Alabama foodies!
4. Speaking of fried, we'll deep fry just about anything.
Fried pickles, anyone?
5. As long as it gets us from Point A to Point B, we'll drive pretty much anything on our rural roads.
Tractors, ATVs, four wheelers and horse-drawn carriages...just to name a few.
6. We have many small towns with the strangest of names.
A few examples include Burnt Corn (pictured), Slapout, Frog Eye, Slicklizzard and Chigger Town.
7. We drink sweet iced tea year-round for all three meals.
We love it that much!
8. Eating plain peanuts just won't do. We have to add them to a bottle of coke to get the perfect Southern concoction.
Don't knock it until you try it!
9. We'll also never pass up a batch of delicious boiled peanuts.
Boiled peanuts are the absolute BEST!
10. While tornado sirens are going off, the last thing most of us think about is taking shelter.
We would much rather run outside to see if we can spot the funnel cloud.
11. We use time to measure distance, not miles.
Here in Alabama, it's all about the time it takes to get somewhere, and less about the distance driven.
