Sure, small town living is great, but sometimes you’ve got to visit bigger cities for quality dining and entertainment. Many of the bigger cities in Alabama have unlimited options when it comes to dining and entertainment and I’ve listed 10 of these cities below.
1. Birmingham
Birmingham, incorporated in 1871, is the largest city in Alabama and the county seat of Jefferson County. Because of Birmingham's numerous museums and art galleries, it's been called the "Cultural and Entertainment Capital of Alabama." Dining, retail and cultural options are continuously increasing in Birmingham. Some of the popular attractions in this Alabama city include the Birmingham Zoo, Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Vulcan, the world's largest cast iron statue.
2. Montgomery
Montgomery, incorporated in 1819, is the capital of Alabama and the county seat of Montgomery County. Many of the old warehouses and buildings downtown have been transformed into high-end loft apartments, restaurants, hotels and businesses. Downtown Montgomery also offers, for those interested in history, attractions such as the State Capitol Building and Dexter Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was once a pastor.
3. Mobile
Founded in 1702, Mobile is the county seat of Mobile County and is Alabama's only saltwater port. Mobile is home to several art museums, a symphony orchestra, a professional opera and Battleship Memorial Park. Many beautiful historic neighborhoods are located throughout Mobile.
4. Huntsville
Huntsville was established in 1809 and is the county seat of Madison County. It's been nicknamed "The Rocket City" and offers many employment opportunities and wonderful residential areas for those interested in making the city their home. Huntsville's most popular attraction is the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, and it's also home to several parks, golf courses and museums. This Alabama city's newest shopping area is Bridge Street Town Centre, which attracts shoppers from all over the state.
5. Tuscaloosa
Incorporated in 1819, Tuscaloosa is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County and home of the University of Alabama. In addition to Bryant-Denny Stadium (Crimson Tide), Tuscaloosa is known for its wonderful museums, such as the Paul W. Bryant Museum and the Alabama Museum of Natural History. For anyone who loves barbecue, a visit to Tuscaloosa's Dreamland Bar-B-Que is a MUST!
6. Hoover
Hoover, Birmingham's largest suburb, was incorporated in 1967 and is located in Jefferson and Shelby counties. Hoover is home to Riverchase Galleria (pictured above,) one of the largest shopping centers in the Southeast. In addition to shopping options, Hoover also offers nice residential areas, excellent schools and beautiful parks.
7. Dothan
Dothan is located in the southeastern corner of Alabama and is the county seat of Houston County. It's nicknamed "The Peanut Capital of the World" and its biggest event is the National Peanut festival, which is held every year. A couple of Dothan's popular attractions include the Highland Oaks Golf Course and the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens.
8. Decatur
Decatur, founded in 1820, is located in Morgan and Limestone counties and is known as "The River City." This Alabama city offers unlimited shopping, dining and recreational options. The Princess Theatre (pictured above) has been a Decatur landmark for more than a century and holds a variety of annual events.
9. Auburn
Auburn was incorporated in 1839 and is located in Lee County. This Alabama city is home to Auburn University and offers many cultural and recreational opportunities. Besides Jordan-Hare Stadium (Auburn Tigers), one of Auburn's largest attractions is Toomer's Drugs, which has been a local tradition since 1896.
10. Madison
Madison, a suburb of Huntsville, is located in Madison County and was first settled in 1818. Its downtown historic district offers wonderful shopping and dining opportunities.
