The Gopher Tortoise Trail in Gulf State Park is the best hike near Gulf Shores, Alabama for those who like a flat, paved route with woods and water views. It is a favorite among cyclists and is also great for casual walkers, joggers, and families. If you’re like me and can’t handle a buggy hike, be sure to pack the spray for this one!
The 2.2-mile out-and-back trail begins and ends directly south of the Gulf State Park Golf Course, at a parking area on Refuge Road. The parking area has ADA-accessible spaces, and the paved trail is wheelchair accessible.
From the parking areas, the Coyote Crossing Trail extends west, and the Gulf Oak Ridge Trail to the north. The Gopher Tortoise Trail extends south and curves along the eastern side of Shelby Lake.
The pavement makes the trail especially appealing to cyclists, too. There is little shade, however, so be prepared with plenty of water and sunscreen.
The area between Shelby Lake and the trail has plenty of pines and a diversity of plant life. A trail sign explains not to expect to actually see any gopher tortoises in this part of the park, though. They prefer more dry, scrubby environments in the far eastern stretches of the park.
So... why is this trail named for creatures that aren't even here? The sign explains it's a nod to how the trail shares an important characteristic with the tortoises, in that they both are important links in the park. The tortoises are critical in connecting the ecosystem just as this trail connects with many others within the Gulf State Park.
Meanwhile, you likely will see alligators and armadillos, if you keep your eyes peeled!
Another important note is this trail's proximity to Gulf State Park Campground, which has about 496 improved, full-hookup campsites and 11 primitive sites. If you happen to camp there, the trail's midway, turnaround point is at Campground Road on the western end of the grounds.
