If you’re on the hunt for the best biscuits and gravy in Alabama, many folks point to Cahawba House in downtown Montgomery. Its location on South Court Street one block from the Court Square Fountain makes it a perfect breakfast pit stop if you’re there on a weekend exploring the city’s Civil Rights Trail sites. Even if you aren’t, it’s worth dropping in for what its owners call “Bama Bonafide Southern Food.” When that’s your claim, your biscuits and gravy had better be good!
The food lives up to the promise at Cahawba House, which has gained a loyal following since it opened in late 2016. The restaurant has changed up its hours as of late 2023, opening three nights during the week for supper and late nights only on Friday and Saturday.
The dish in question, though, you'll find on Saturdays and Sundays, the only time it does brunch. And it starts with pans full of golden, fluffy biscuits.
Cahawba House customers have had their pick of all kinds of Bama bonafide biscuit creations. One is "The Smothered Pig," which combines house-made pimento cheese and Conecuh sausage hugged up inside a biscuit and smothered in gravy.
The sausage could be swapped for a sausage patty and fried green tomato for a slightly more streamlined cross-section. On the menu most recently is the simple Southern Biscuit which has all the ingredients just listed, with bacon instead of sausage.
Others may instead choose to tackle the chicken-or-egg conundrum with a bite of both between a biscuit at Cahawba House. The Chicken & The Egg sandwich has scrambled eggs, a chicken thigh, cheddar, and a side of grits with more cheddar.

Of course, there are many other options on the brunch menu, not to mention the supper and late-night noshes. You can customize your order and try other favorites on the selection of sides alongside the biscuits and gravy.
You can visit the restaurant on the Cahawba House website and keep up with specials on the Cahawba House Facebook page.
We realize saying “best biscuits and gravy in Alabama” is a big claim and may be fightin’ words. Alabamians are not afraid to celebrate our roots, especially when it comes to Southern cooking.
Do you agree that Cahawba House has the best? If you’ve not tasted them yourself, we hope you’ll let us know about your experience.
