There are many wonderful places located throughout Alabama that offer incredible hiking opportunities. From easy trails to difficult trails, and canyon trails to waterfront trails, there’s truly a hiking trail for everyone. Little River Canyon National Preserve, located in Fort Payne, Alabama, is the perfect place to go hiking.
Little River Canyon features more than 12 miles of beautiful scenery, including Little River, several waterfalls, interesting rock formations and so much more. Of all the hiking trails within Little River Canyon National Preserve, the Martha's Falls Trail tops them all.
The Martha's Falls Trail is 1.5 miles round trip and takes about one hour to complete, unless you stop to relax. This popular hiking trail begins at the back of the Little River Falls parking lot. There will be a sign directing you where to go. You can't miss it.
For the most part, the Martha's Falls Trail is flat. However, there are several areas that are very rocky. Pictured is the type of terrain you'll experience if you hike this scenic trail.
As you continue following the trail, you'll notice the terrain has turned to nearly all rock. This will make it difficult to follow the trail. Just remember that the Martha's Falls Trail is located along the river. So, as long as you can see the river, you're on the Martha's Falls Trail.
And judging from this photo, there's no better time to hike the Martha's Falls Trail than during the fall season.
The moment you arrive at Martha's Falls, you'll actually be standing on the waterfall itself. Martha's Falls is made up of several ledges. The water that flows from the trail, if any water at all, trickles off the ledges and forms Martha's Falls.
And when there's been a lot of rainfall, Martha's Falls is absolutely BREATHTAKING!
After hiking the Martha's Falls Trail, there's no better way to cool off than by taking a dip in what locals refer to as the "Hippie Hole." The "Hippie Hole" is one of Alabama's most popular swimming spots.
Overall, Little River Canyon National Preserve is the perfect place to be if you're looking for excellent hiking opportunities. This scenic canyon area truly is an outdoorsman's paradise.
