America's First Recorded Cave Is Right Here In Alabama

Alabama has one of the highest cave densities in the world. In fact, cavers travel from all over to explore our spectacular caves. One cave that remains at the top of most cave enthusiasts’ bucket list is DeSoto Caverns. DeSoto Caverns is a series of caves that's located at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains in Childersburg, Alabama.
It's believed to be America's first recorded cave, which makes it incredibly unique. People travel from all over the world to visit DeSoto Caverns.
The "Great Onyx Cathedral" is the name of the main room at DeSoto Caverns. It's longer than a football field and measures an impressive 12 stories high.
DeSoto Caverns, which is nicknamed "Alabama's Big Cave," also contains one of the world's largest collections of onyx-marble stalagmites and stalactites.
In December 1796, Benjamin Hawkins, the General Superintendent for Indian Affairs during George Washington's presidency, visited the upper Creek Indian territory. After Hawkins reported the magnificence of DeSoto Caverns to President Washington, it became America's first officially recorded cave.
