There are so many unusual sites in Alabama, so be sure to always pay close attention while driving down the road because you never know what you’ll see. This is just a short list of the many unusual sites you’ll find in Alabama.
1. Rock Animal Zoo
Located outside of Scottsboro, this is definitely not your typical zoo. The Rock Animal Zoo has about two dozen animals created out of limestone and colorful paints. With the creation of the pet rock many years ago, it was only a matter of time before an entire zoo of rock animals was created. This is Alabama's only known rock animal zoo.
2. World's Largest Office Chair
You'll find the world's largest office chair in Anniston - standing at 33ft tall with a 15ft square seat, and built from ten tons of steel.
3. African Village in America
For the past few decades in Birmingham, Joe Minter has been packing the yard around his house with bits of scrap and junk to create art. The theme of his "village" is African-American and everyone is invited for a tour during the daylight hours free of charge.
4. Whiskey Tombstone
This tombstone can be found in Clayton Town Cemetery, and it was designed by an extremely frustrated wife. She told her husband, William T. Mullen, that she'd make him a tombstone shaped like a whiskey bottle if he didn't stop drinking. Well, it looks like she kept her word!
5. Shoe Tree
In Cherokee, along U.S. Highway 72, is the legendary shoe tree - a tree with dozens of shoes draped over the branches. This tree has developed into a unique landmark and catches the attention of everyone who drives by it.
6. Go to Church Billboard
Sitting alongside I-65, between Montgomery and Birmingham, sits this religious billboard and it definitely speaks for itself. I have to admit, it does make me laugh whenever I see it. Only in the bible belt!
7. One Millionth Fire Hydrant Monument
Albertville became known as the "Fire Hydrant Capital of the World" after the city produced the one millionth fire hydrant. A chrome fire hydrant sits outside the Chamber of Commerce to commemorate the event.
8. Playhouse Grave
In Oakwood Cemetery, located in Lanett, sits an unusual grave belonging to Little Nadine Earles, who died a week before Christmas in 1933. Sadly, she was only four years old. Prior to Little Nadine getting ill, her father had started building her a playhouse for her Christmas gift. Following her death, he finished it and installed it on top of her grave. Even though this is such a sad and sweet story, the fact there's a playhouse in the middle of a cemetery is quite unusual.
9. Dinosaurs in the Woods
If you're ever in the Elberta area, near Barber Marina, don't be alarmed if you happen to see four dinosaurs strolling through the woods. Wait! What? I thought dinosaurs were extinct! Well, not in Alabama!
10. World's Smallest City Block
At the intersection of North Appletree, Museum, and Troy streets, in Dothan, marks the "World's Smallest City Block." This piece of land includes a stop sign, a yield sign, a street sign and a granite marker. The property was once used for a service station. That must've been one small service station!
