Alabama has always been portrayed in a bad light. No matter what we do, we’ll always be dumb and behind the times. The stereotypes of Alabama are highly exaggerated and here are 10 that need to be put to rest.
1. We all live in trailers.
Yes, some people do live in trailers here in Alabama, but not everyone. Also, there are trailers in other states, so there's no need to always single out Alabama!
2. We're all racist.
Alabama is well known for its history of racism. Sadly, racism still exists in this state, but not everyone here is racist.
3. We all live in the country.
Alabama is more than just rural farmland. Our state is also the home to big cities with suburbs. So, nope! We don't all live out in the middle of nowhere!
4. We're all uneducated.
This can't be further from the truth. Alabama is the home to many colleges and some of the top universities in the nation. We also have world-class medical facilities in our state. And if that's not enough, Huntsville has been playing a major role in the U.S. space program since the 1950s.
5. We all drive pickups.
False! We also drive cars, SUVs and vans. Surprising isn't it?
7. We all have missing teeth.
We don't all have missing teeth. Most of us do receive proper dental care and know what a toothbrush is.
6. We only shop at Walmart.
We do shop at places other than Walmart. Maybe you've heard of Target...
8. We kiss our cousins.
Eww! Sooo not true!
9. We only listen to country music.
I guess this would be true if we counted out pop, jazz, rock, hip hop, R&B, rap, blues, etc. The point is we listen to many different genres of music. Not just country.
10. We're all poor.
Forget about how we're depicted on television. We're not all poor. This state is filled with people of extreme wealth.
