10 Hidden Places In Connecticut Only Locals Know About

We’ve uncovered a number of lesser known spots throughout the state, but we were worried that some folks may have missed them, so we compiled this list of hidden places just for you. From state parks to luxury resorts, there are tons of Connecticut destinations that are worth exploring. But these spots have the added bonus of being more unknown, which often means less crowded and more quiet. Check out our list of hidden places now:
1. Chaffinch Island
Catch views of Faulkner Island Lighthouse and soak up the silence as a light sea breeze washes over you. Skip the crowds and comb the rocky shoreline to find coral, conch, and even oysters. Not to mention the world's greatest sunsets.

2. Hidden Valley Preserve
How would you like to be surrounded by 650 acres of lush forest? This riverfront park features a collection of hikes, all less than five miles long and a handicap accessible bridge system. It's designed for novice explorers to grow their love of hiking.

3. The Center Church Crypt
There are reportedly hundreds of colonial remains resting under the New Haven Green, so it's no surprise that there's also a church with a crypt in the basement. Or maybe not. This crypt wasn't made in the natural way. The church was just built over a graveyard and the grass was covered with bricks, making this one of the creepiest destinations around.

4. Steep Rock Railroad Tunnel
The train no longer runs here, making it a cool cave like experience for hiking enthusiasts. The path, formerly covered in tracks, is pretty smooth and easy to navigate. You'll definitely want to bring a flashlight, as this 235 foot tunnel will have you in complete darkness, but it's totally worth checking out in every season.

5. Hearthstone Castle
Tucked in to a state park are the last remnants of what was once an incredible castle. It had several fireplaces, an incredible view, gorgeous stonework and the owners were known to throw lavish parties. But now it's being reclaimed by nature, so if you want to see it act fast!

6. The Mayflower Grace
In the middle of the woods lies a massive estate. And on that estate rests a beautiful luxury hotel with incredible dining. When it comes to escaping the hum drum of everyday life I couldn't recommend a better place to do it. With gardens and trails it's all about relaxing in nature.

7. Lao Buddha Ariyamett Aram Temple
That's right. There's a Lao temple right here in Connecticut, and despite being built ten years ago, it's still shrouded in mystery. You're free to explore the grounds where you'll find intricate statues, shrines and plenty of worshipers. As long as you don't interrupt anything, they're extremely friendly. But they won't answer any questions, keeping the mystery alive for years to come.

8. Lavender Pond Farm
It's all in the name folks. This farm really is dedicated to the growing of lavender, and in addition to being the most wonderfully scented farm you'll every visit, they also have a gift shop with lavender soaps, candles and more. If you've been longing for a relaxing stroll, weaving between these rows of lavender is perfect.

9. Bluff Point State Park
This peninsula features a great picninc area just off the parking lot and after a quick mile long hike through the woods you'll suddenly find yourself standing on this beautiful coastline. Soft white sand makes this dog friendly retreat perfect for a summer day trip. Splash in the water and lay out in the grass to get the perfect summer tan.

10. Wild Bill's Nostalgia

This is the coolest store you'll ever visit. It had balancing yugos, a haunted house, far out hippie vans, the world's largest jack-in-the-box and tons of cool vintage finds that you won't find at an antiques store. We're talking comics, figurines, records and more. This place is unbelievable!
