Alaska is a big place, mostly covered in wilderness. Secrets can be hidden in the woods, even enormous military bases or pyramids that vanish into the mountain ranges and thick forests without most knowing about it. This gives rise to a whole variety of conspiracy theories that the government is covering up secret projects, creatures and crimes in the long, dark nights. Here is a sampling of things people talk about in coffee shops and dive bars across the great land. Decide for yourself what is true.
1. JAL Flight 1628
Japane Airlines cargo flight 1628 had an incident with a UFO on December 17, 1986. The captain, co-pilot and engineer all observed two small, fast aircraft follow them for miles, inexplicably defying the laws of physics. These two craft merged with a third, much larger disk-shaped object they were headed toward, causing the pilots to request a change of course. The incident was recorded by both military and civilian aviators and ground control. The official word was a "split radar screen", but many think a lot more happened that day.
2. Chemtrails
Streaks in the sky from airplane exhaust or a secret poisoning of the American people? The chemtrail conspiracy theory is the claim that when high-flying aircraft leave long-lasting trails, or "chemtrails", they consist of chemical or biological agents deliberately sprayed for unknown purposes undisclosed to the public. Normal "contrails" from aircraft dissipate quickly, so chemtrails that are still visible after a few minutes must contain additional poisonous substances. Some say it's experimentation involving mind control or some other mass population control involving an inhalable chemical. The debate rages on.
3. HAARP - High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP)
HAARP was an ionospheric research program jointly funded by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), designed and built by BAE Advanced Technologies (BAEAT). The project was ongoing from 1993-2015 when it was permanently shut down. HAARP had several research facilities with large numbers of transmitters. The official goal was to disrupt the ionosphere which would throw off the enemy's communication systems when in wartime. The theory is that the U.S. government was weaponising weather, the aurora borealis, and possibly controlling local populations actions and desires with low frequency radio waves.
4. Alaska Bigfoot
There are several kinds of "bigfoot" type creatures said to inhabit Alaska. The Kushtaka of Southeast are said to be part otter, part man and able to shapeshift into various forms. They can be harmful and tricky by drowning sailors or helpful by saving them. There are also Urayuli, or hairy men, of Southwest Alaska who are peaceful, at least 10 feet tall and make a sound like a loon. The existence of these creatures is constantly debated and many seek for signs of them in the woods.
5. Joe Vogler
The founder of the Alaska Independence Party Joe Vogler lived from 1913-1993, or did he? Vogler was a secessionist who led the charge for Alaska to leave the U.S. and become it's own nation. He was supposedly killed in a dispute over illegal plastic explosives, but many believe he was murdered by the CIA for being a secessionist. Vogler disappeared under suspicious circumstances in May 1993 just weeks before he was scheduled to give a speech to the United Nations on Alaskan independence, sponsored by the government of Iran. Some say he is still alive somewhere under detention being tortured, or on a beach after a great escape. There are a lot of questions still unanswered.
6. Underground Pyramid
Some say that near Talkeetna, on the edge of Denali National Park, is a pyramid. Like the pyramids of Egypt, this one was built thousands of years ago, probably by extra terrestrials. It is buried underground and the government keeps it secret... or so it is said.
7. Lake Iliamna Monster
There is said to be a giant, white creature that swims in Alaska's largest lake. "Illie" has been seen for years by generations of Alaskans and is thought to be either a Pacific sleeper shark, a She fish, a sturgeon, or an ancient dinosaur-like monster that is rarely seen. Theories abound, but it is certain that something is there swimming in the dark waters of the giant lake.
